So today, I broke one of my unbreakable bowls. It splattered all across the floor like no one’s business! I have to admit here that I rarely sweep my floors. You may or may not know that there are nine of us living here right now. Yes, I said Nine! And, six of them are under the age of nine. It can be very busy and it is amazing how dirty the kitchen floor can get after one meal and I am a clean freak.
But, I am also efficient.
So, we have a Roomba.
And we run it all the time.
Let Me Make Get Back to How the Broken Dish Helped me Understand Something about Doing Business on Social Media. Wait What? Ok, so…
When the bowl broke and shattered all over creation, I had to use a broom. Here I am, in the utility closet, looking for the broom. First off, I couldn’t see it. I couldn’t believe we didn’t have a broom, I mean, I remember buying one. Well, it turns out that it was hidden behind the dust pan. Crazy right?
Right there in front of me and I couldn’t see it, actually it was in my hand, I was holding it. I digress.
So, I started sweeping. And it felt good. It felt comfortable. I used to sweep all the time (Clean freak. Remember?)
Now, what does this have to do with online marketing? EVERYTHING!
It used to be that, like sweeping was the only option to clean a floor, home parties were the only way to do your marketing. If you grew up in that era, home parties, hotel meetings, cold calling, bothering and/or begging your friends and family was the only thing you knew.
And, you are comfortable there.
The broom feels so nice in your arms, the movement is soothing, the results measurable by the mess being swept away.
For some of us, marketing online via social media is just too hard. Confusing. Takes so much time to learn about. Yadda.yadda.yadda.
But look, I want you to know that it’s ok. It’s ok if you want to stay where you are. It really is. Sweep with a broom –feel the comfortable handle within your arms.Or: use a vacuum cleaner, better yet: a Roomba. Why switch from cold calling and telling everyone within a foot of you about your business to social media?
Because there is no getting around the fact that on Facebook alone, there are over a BILLION users a DAY! Yes! A BILLION!
Just how many people can you talk to in a day at the mall?
There is a catch..sorry.
There is a certain skill set involved and most people online simply blast their news feeds with their product, or before and after pictures. This is NOT about a constant barrage of posts about your company or your product. That gets old real quick. Even your closest friends will get tired of that
Don’t do it.
So back to the dishes: it was actually cleaning up the mess while holding that comfortable broom in my arms that I realized how hard it must be for some people to change over their thinking, especially if that’s all they ever knew.
So let me just say this: Make a decision on whether or not you want to take advantage of the exposure that social media can give to you. Once you make that decision, start small by using your personal profile to show people who you are. Keep it positive..and that, my friend, is the BEST way to start using social media. Stay tuned on this blog as I share how I used Social Media to grow my team and with one statement, in the right place, how it got me 68 people asking ME for more info on what I do! In a 36 hour period.
To your abundance!
